 Introduction to Candidate RCE London

Help Build a Sustainable London

What is a Regional Centre for Expertise (RCE) ?

An RCE is an active and diverse network of people and organisations working to promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in their region. They comprise schools, community and voluntary groups, the business sector, universities, non governmental organisations, local authorities and interested individuals.

RCEs are an integral part of the United Nations University and a key building block in the Global Learning Network which is a central element in the United Nations Decade for ESD (DESD).

What is the Global Learning Network?

The Global Learning Network promotes Education for Sustainable Development and strives for a world where everyone has the opportunity to benefit from quality education and learn the values, behaviour and lifestyles that are required for a sustainable present and future.

How will the London RCE fit in ?

London is a dynamic and diverse metropolis. But it is also a truly world city with many regional and global connections. London will be the first capital city in Europe to have an RCE and has the potential to play a key role in the Global Learning Network.

The Vision for London RCE

The London RCE aims to

·        Transform education by developing the capacity of Londoners to learn together to make London a more sustainable and inclusive place to live, work and play

·        Provide a  forum  by means of dialogue and action through which communities can be empowered and  make their voices heard

·        Build on the diversity of London to help shape and influence global excellence in ESD through innovation in learning

·         To learn from the experience and knowledge of our partners in the Global Learning Network  so that we can work together to create a more sustainable world

The Focus for the London RCE

Three flag ship projects have so far been established:

·        Sustainability and the HE curriculum: embedding issues of sustainability in the curriculum at  London South Bank and at other London HEIs

·        Place based learning for sustainable communities: connecting people, place and learning for positive action

·        The London ESD Teacher Education Network: promoting and supporting ESD throughout all London providers of teacher education
